Two dreams come true with a passive solar design on view in the Green Homes Tour, on Saturday

As their kids grew and began leaving the nest, Cathy and Barry Stamp started thinking about two dreams they’d had about a new house: one, to get something very sustainable, and two, to create something more comfortably sized than their current ,-square-foot place.

“After the kids were gone, we were using percent of it,” says Cathy.

In , they set out to build a blend of those concepts and found a site they loved overlooking Golden’s “Howdy Folks!” downtown from the slope of North Table Mountain.

You can see the results Saturday, Oct. — a warm, welcoming passive-solar design that’s less than , feet of finished space — on the Metro Denver Green Homes Tour, a drive-yourself tour of sustainable homes.

You’ll pick up a ticketmap at the Colorado Mountaineering Center in downtown Golden $ per person.  And be sure to see this great house, a mile north of there.

Actually, the Stamps lost out on that lot to another bidder and put their dreams on hold. But last year, the resulting home came back on the market, and this time they didn’t let it get away.

You’ll find a modest-looking exterior in corrugated steel, hiding a certified passive design that has windows placed not just for great views from its entertaining area, but to bring in sunlight when needed, storing that heat in exposed concrete floors.

The design gets a boost from being burrowed into the hillside — better shelter from cold air in winter, hot air in summer — along with high-tech heatingcooling technology a heat pump working with a heat-recovery vent system, supplied by . kW of electric from rooftop solar panels.

The resulting performance is off the charts of current home energy ratings. The Stamps’ home actually puts out more energy than it uses Xcel sends the couple a check each year.

Thirteen other homes have their own stories to tell, many like this, on the west end of town.

“All cities should be demanding passive house building codes to decarbonize America’s housing,” says John Avenson of New Energy Colorado, one of the nonprofit sponsors.
